Tooth Extractions in Saskatoon

What is Tooth Extraction?

Tooth extraction is the process of removing a tooth from its socket. This may be required if a tooth is damaged beyond repair or is not a good candidate for a root canal.  There are two types of tooth extractions: surgical and simple tooth extractions. When visible and easily accessible teeth are removed, the process is referred to as simple extraction. Alternatively, a surgical extraction requires additional procedures to gain access to the affected tooth.

Simple Tooth Extraction

A simple tooth extraction can usually be carried out by general dentists. Local anesthesia will be used to numb the affected area to ensure the patient does not experience any discomfort during the procedure.

Elevating the tooth during this procedure is required, therefore instruments like dental forceps and elevators are used to allow for easier access to the tooth or teeth.

An example of this is the removal of a tooth that is infected beyond repair and cannot be saved through root canal therapy.

Surgical Dental Extraction

Unlike the simple tooth extraction that focuses on the visible tooth in the mouth, the surgical tooth extraction focuses on removing a tooth that is not so visible or accessible. The reason for the inaccessibility could be that the teeth did not erupt completely via the gum or as a result of a fracture is beneath the gum line.

This procedure typically involves the patient being subdued using a general anesthetic to lessen the pain they have to endure and allow the procedure to run more smoothly and efficiently.

Our dental clinic can perform many types of extractions, however, if it appears there may be a high degree of difficulty in removing a tooth, or a risk of complications, you may be referred to a specialist to reduce the risk of complication.
