What are Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are very thin shells of porcelain or resin that are bonded to the front surface of teeth.  They are use to restore function in damaged teeth or to improve the esthetics of misshapen, misaligned, or discoloured teeth.

Porcelain veneers are fabricated in a dental lab and are made of materials that closely resemble the translucent look of natural teeth. This type of restoration can take several visits to your dentist before an accurate fit and color are achieved.

Dental Bonding uses carefully matched composite resin material (filling material) to restore the function and esthetics of teeth.  This procedure is carried out entirely in your dental office and can often be accomplished without the need for local anesthesia.  It is a more conservative procedure than porcelain veneers but composite resin is more prone to small chips and staining over time.

Caring for Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are created using quality material that are durable and have a long lifespan. However, this does not mean they are exempt from damage. To ensure your porcelain veneers remain in good condition, it is important to adopt a good oral hygiene routine and regularly visit your dentist for exams and dental cleanings. Avoiding foods that are excessively hard, helps keep them in good shape as well. If you have any questions about this procedure, contact our dental clinic today.

What Is the Process for Getting Porcelain Veneers

The process of placing porcelain veneers includes the following steps:

Initial consultation: this process starts with a consultation with your dentist and discussing your expectations. The dentist will then assess your teeth to determine if porcelain veneers are the best treatment for you based on your end goal. If you are seeking a way to improve the shape, size, or color of your teeth, you will likely be recommended this treatment.

Preparation of the teeth: following the consultation, your dentist will prepare your teeth by removing a thin layer of enamel from each tooth to make room for the veneers. A mold of your mouth is taken which is used for the fabrication of porcelain veneers. Temporary veneers may be placed on your teeth to protect them until your porcelain veneers are ready. The temporary veneers are very fragile and need to be treated gently during eating and cleaning as they become loose very easily.

Fabrication of the porcelain veneers: A mold will then be taken of your teeth. This mold will be sent to a dental lab and used to custom-make your porcelain veneers. In the meantime, your dentist may place temporary veneers to protect the teeth during the fabrication process. These are worn until your porcelain veneers are ready.

Placing of porcelain veneers: when your porcelain veneers in are created, you will visit your dentist for the bonding process. Your dentist will check if the porcelain veneers fit your teeth correctly and if there are any necessary adjustments before bonding each one to your teeth.
