Dental Bridges in Saskatoon
Dental Bridge Treatment
The function of the dental bridge is to bridge any gap created by a missing tooth or teeth. The bridge is comprised of a metal framework and dental crowns, used as anchors, situated on the teeth adjacent to the gap. These anchoring teeth are referred to as abutment teeth, while the false tooth (or teeth) lies in between. The false teeth are referred to as pontics and are usually made up of alloys, gold, porcelain or a combined mixture of all. The false teeth are used to fill the gaps created by the missing teeth and restore the functionality of the mouth. Dental bridges are held firm by dental implants or natural teeth.
What Is the Process for Getting a Dental Bridge?
During the first visit, abutment teeth are prepared by your dentist. This involves recontouring the abutment teeth by removing a portion of the enamel. This is done to allow for the dental crowns to fit comfortably over the teeth. Impressions of the teeth are taken and used as a model from which the bridge, crowns and pontic are created in a dental lab. A temporary bridge is created to safeguard the gum and exposed teeth during the dental bridge fabrication process.
Upon the second visit, the temporary bridge will be removed, and the new metal or porcelain bridge is adjusted and checked to ensure it fits properly. After this is done, your dentist will cement the dental bridge into place. It is important to book an appointment with your dentist every six months to ensure your oral health is in good standing and the dental bridge is in good condition.
